What is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

The primary focus of the EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation, and functions as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. An EMT performs interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance and is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

    About the Program:

The eligible candidate will be hired as a per diem employee and compensated a training wage while in attendance in the EMT academy. The Academy is a rigorous ten-week program which qualifies the employee to take the National Registry of EMT exam which then allows the employee to apply for a MS state EMT-B license. There is no cost for the class and all books, tuition, fees and uniforms will be paid by AMR.  Upon successful completion of the class, all tests and state licensure, the employee will be transferred to an EMT position with an increase to the EMT compensation.

    The right acceptable candidate must:

    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • Have proof of a HS diploma or GED
    • Have all required immunizations
    • Successfully complete the pre-employment screening which includes motor vehicle record and criminal background checks, drug testing and a physical ability test

What happens after passing the course?

After successful completion of the course, the employee will be eligible to take a written and skills test through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Once certified by the NREMT, the employee will then submit the required documentation to the state to obtain their Mississippi EMT-B license.

Upon receipt of the state EMT-B license, employees will choose their full-time shift and complete new employee training. They will also qualify for benefits including:

    • Medical, dental, life, vision, disability and 401(k) plan with company match
    • Paid Time Off (PTO)
    • Opportunities for professional growth
    • Response to nationwide disasters

    What is a hybrid program?

Our classes have traditionally been Mon-Thurs, 09:00-17:00. The hybrid model will allow for a majority of the course work to be completed online with only one day per week needed in class (09:00-17:00). The only exception will be 5 clinical days that take place during the final two weeks but they are self-scheduled.
